BREAKING NEWS: Changes to the “Spousal Rule” for Couples on PWD
While some changes are a huge leap towards inclusion, there is still change required!
Starting this December, people with disabilities in B.C. will finally have more financial independence and equality. The province has removed the “spousal rule,” meaning couples where both partners have a disability will now each receive the full amount for a single person on disability assistance — instead of having their benefits reduced simply because they are in a relationship.
This change is an important step toward dignity, autonomy, and safety for people with disabilities!
It is still incredibly disappointing that a person on disability could lose their independence or become their partner’s dependent if that partner earns above a certain amount — creating a potentially vulnerable and dangerous situation.
