After You Apply

Waiting for a decision

Service Canada will review your application. We expect to send you a letter with an eligibility decision within 28 calendar days of applying for the benefit. However, if a legal representative is applying on your behalf, an eligibility decision should be expected within 49 calendar days of the application.

To check the status of your application, contact Service Canada.

If you disagree with the decision

If you disagree with the eligibility decision, payment amount or think an error was made, you can ask for a reconsideration.

To do this, submit a request within 180 days of the date on your decision letter (found in the top right-hand corner). If you are a legal representative, you can request a reconsideration on someone’s behalf.

If you are submitting your request after the 180 days, you will need to explain what prevented you from submitting it sooner.

Your request will be reviewed by Service Canada who were not involved in making the original decision on your application.

Payments

Payment dates

If you qualify for payments, you’ll be paid the month after your application is approved. Payments are sent on the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Find the list of Canada Disability Benefit payments dates.

If your total yearly payment for the period from July 1 of the current year to June 30 of the next year is $240 or less (which is $20 or less per month), you’ll receive one lump sum payment instead of monthly payments. This lump sum will cover the remaining months in the payment period and will be paid on the date of your next scheduled payment.

Payment methods

You can receive payments by direct deposit or cheque. If you’ve already applied and would like to change how you’re receiving payments, contact Service Canada or complete a direct deposit request form.

Drop it off at a Service Canada office or mail it to:
Service Canada Centre
CDB Processing Centre
P.O. Box 60
Boucherville, QC J4B 5E6

Keep getting your payments

Every Spring, you will receive a letter asking you to confirm if you’re still eligible for the benefit. The deadline for this is June 1st of each year. If you miss the June 1st deadline, you will need to reapply for the benefit.

To stay eligible, you must continue to meet the benefit’s eligibility criteria such as having an approved disability tax credit and having filed your income tax return by April 30th every year. For the full list of eligibility criteria go to the eligibility requirements.

Tax information

In February, you will receive a tax information slip to include when you file your taxes. You don’t have to pay income tax on your benefit payment.
