TeenWork

What is TeenWork?

TeenWork is an innovative youth employment program developed by CanAssist at the University of Victoria. The program is designed to help youth with disabilities and mental health challenges find and retain part-time paid employment while attending high school.

Since 2009, TeenWork has focused on improving the independence and quality of life of youth with disabilities and mental health challenges in the Greater Victoria area. Job coaches support participants to find and retain meaningful, paid employment,  which enables them to acquire practical, sought-after skills, optimism about their futures, and a sense of self-confidence that will serve them throughout their working lives. In 2018, TeenWork expanded and is now offered in the Lower Mainland in partnership with CBI Consultants Ltd.

Why TeenWork?

One of the most significant predictors of competitive employment in adulthood for people with disabilities is paid employment in high school (Wehman, Sima, Ketchum et al., 2015).

While 65% of 15 to 24 year olds without disabilities find employment, only 32% of individuals with disabilities in the same age range are employed. TeenWork participants experience a much higher employment rate, where 93% of program participants obtain paid employment.

TeenWork is a unique social innovation that reduces participants’ long-term dependency on public health and social services, while improving the lives of young people and their families. There are no other employment programs like TeenWork for marginalized youth with disabilities in the province.
